Ernesto wondered whether she was done with entertaining. Or would she reappear to sizzle again before her adoring fans?

Would the Naomi Martinez he knew and loved still exist after that performance? Surely all that whistling and cheering had gone to her head. It had to. She had stepped into a new and magical world. That world was far from the boring confines of Cesar Chavez High School and the dreary barrio. And that world did not include Ernesto. She had to be dreaming of gigs in Vegas.

Orlando sang two songs after Naomi’s number. And the band played a few instrumentals. Then the show was over.

Ernesto walked to the Volvo in the darkness to wait for Naomi. Suddenly she emerged into the light. She wore the blue pullover and jeans she had on before the show She carried a dark green garbage bag. Ernesto didn’t know what was in it.

She seemed about to say something. But then Felix and Linda Martinez came over to hug their daughter. “You were so beautiful, baby!” her father exclaimed. “And you sang like an angel.”
